How many porta potties do you need for a wedding?

Too few and there's a line during the toast. Too many and you paid for units nobody used. Here's the math planners actually use, plus when a luxury trailer beats a row of units.

Quick answer

Plan one restroom per 50–75 guests for a 4–6 hour wedding. Add 20% if there's a bar, and one ADA-accessible unit per cluster when the public is invited. For 150 guests with a bar: 5 standard units + 1 ADA + 2 handwash stations — or one 2-stall luxury trailer.

The formula

The industry rule of thumb is one unit per 50 guests for events up to 4 hours. Weddings run longer (ceremony + cocktail hour + reception ≈ 5–6 hours) and usually serve alcohol, which raises restroom trips by about 20–30%. So:

  • Base: guests ÷ 50 for 4 hours, ÷ 40 for 6+ hours.
  • Alcohol: multiply by 1.2.
  • ADA: 5% of units, minimum one, when anyone with mobility needs may attend (so, always).
  • Handwash: one station per 2–4 units, next to the units, not inside them.
  • Round up. Nobody has ever complained about a short line.

Chart by guest count (5-hour wedding, bar)

Use this as the starting point; adjust for heat (more water = more trips) and the venue's own restrooms.

  • 50 guests: 2 standard + 1 ADA, or 1 two-stall trailer
  • 100 guests: 3 standard + 1 ADA + 1 handwash, or 1 two-stall trailer
  • 150 guests: 5 standard + 1 ADA + 2 handwash, or 1 two-stall trailer (tight) / 1 four-stall
  • 200 guests: 6 standard + 1 ADA + 2 handwash, or 1 four-stall trailer
  • 300 guests: 8 standard + 2 ADA + 3 handwash, or 1 four-stall + 1 ADA+2 trailer
  • 500 guests: 12 standard + 2 ADA + 4 handwash, or 1 eight-stall trailer + 1 ADA trailer

Standard units vs. a luxury trailer

Standard units are fine for a backyard wedding with a relaxed crowd. A luxury trailer — flushing porcelain toilets, running water, mirrors, A/C, music — is what guests expect at a vineyard or estate venue, and it's often cheaper than you think once you count what a row of units plus handwash stations and a mid-event service adds up to.

Placement tips planners swear by

Where the units go matters as much as how many:

  • Within 150 feet of the reception, but out of the photo sightlines — behind a hedge, a tent wall, or a drape rental.
  • Level ground. Trailers need a flat spot about 30 × 12 feet and a vehicle path to get there.
  • Lighting: the party ends in the dark. Trailers have it built in; standard units need a solar light or path lighting.
  • Power for a trailer: two 20A circuits within 100 feet, or add a quiet generator.
  • Book an attendant for 200+ guests. Restocked paper, a wiped counter and a smile go a long way.

When to book

Bay Area wedding season is May through October. Trailers for Saturday weddings in that window book 2–3 months out; the week before a holiday weekend, there is nothing left at any price. Off-season, two weeks' notice is usually fine. Our calculator shows the exact price for your date, including the 15% peak-season uplift on trailers.

Frequently asked

How many bathrooms do you need for 150 wedding guests?

With a bar and a 5-hour reception: 5 standard units + 1 ADA + 2 handwash stations, or a single 2-stall luxury trailer (a 4-stall is more comfortable). Without alcohol, 4 standard + 1 ADA.

Is a restroom trailer worth it for a wedding?

For 100+ guests at a venue without indoor restrooms, usually yes. A 2-stall trailer ($2,495/weekend) replaces 4–5 standard units plus handwash stations and a mid-event service, and guests notice the difference.

Do I need an ADA porta potty at a wedding?

If the event is on private property with invited guests only, it isn't legally required — but include one anyway. Elderly relatives and anyone with a stroller will thank you. On public land or permitted venues it's required at 5% of units, minimum one.

How far should porta potties be from the wedding tent?

Close enough to walk in heels (under 150 feet), far enough to be out of photos and downwind. Most planners put them behind the catering area.
