Specifications

The ADA + 2 is a 20-foot luxury trailer with three separate suites: one wheelchair-accessible suite entered by a ramp, and two private standard stalls. It exists because public events need an accessible restroom and most planners would rather it flushed, had running water and was climate controlled, like the rest of their restrooms.

What changes the trailer price:

  • Peak season. May through October adds 15% to trailers only. A Memorial Day weekend event is $4,019; the same event in April is $3,495.
  • Generator. Three 20-amp circuits on separate breakers are rare at parks and plazas, where this trailer most often goes; budget $750 unless the venue confirms the power.
  • Cluster size. The accessible suite covers the first 20 units in the cluster. A 40-unit festival cluster adds 1 ADA unit at $325.
  • Distance. Included within 25 miles. Berkeley at 22 miles and San Mateo at 22 miles are inside; Santa Rosa at 75 miles adds about $175.
  • Days. Multi-day public events are quoted between the weekend and monthly rates with a pump-out between days.

The honest comparison for a wedding: a 2-stall trailer at $2,495 plus one ADA unit at $325 is $2,820 and meets the rule. The ADA + 2 at $3,495 costs $675 more and gives the wheelchair user the same flush, sink and climate control as everyone else. The pricing page shows both configurations.

Against the 4-stall: the 4-stall is $200 cheaper per weekend and serves 100 more guests, but is not accessible. Against the 2-stall plus an ADA unit: $675 more for a flushing, climate-controlled accessible suite. The ADA + 2 is the right call when accessibility is a requirement of the permit or the client, not a courtesy, and when the wheelchair user is the guest of honor's parent.

Best for

  • Public events on city property. Plazas, parks and street fairs where the permit asks for accessible restrooms by count. Berkeley civic events and San Mateo waterfront events are typical; the events page has the sizing table with the 5% column.
  • Weddings with guests who use wheelchairs or walkers. The wedding sizing guide treats the accessible suite as the first decision when any guest needs it.
  • Public-agency programs. Cities, districts and county agencies specify accessible restroom trailers for shelters, vaccination and resource fairs, and multi-week deployments. The government page covers Net-30, PO billing and the exportable service log.
  • Senior-living and healthcare campus events. Family days and fundraisers where a large share of guests need the ramp.
  • Film and TV with public-facing areas. Productions with audience or public holding areas need an accessible restroom there; the film page covers layout.
  • Sonoma and North Bay harvest events. Santa Rosa is 75 miles from Hayward, so the extra-mile charge is about $175; we route the trailer with the generator and standard units in one trip.
  • Occupied-building construction with public access. Hospital and school renovations where the §203.2 worker-only exemption does not apply; the construction page explains mixed-use sizing.

Site requirements and placement

  • Pad: level ground 20' × 8.5' for the trailer, plus 15 to 20 feet of firm, level ground on the ramp side and 3 feet on the stall side. In use that is roughly 20' × 30'. Asphalt, concrete or compacted gravel; firm dry lawn with ground protection.
  • Approach: a straight run of about 45 feet and 12 feet wide, overhead clearance about 13 feet, no gates narrower than 10 feet.
  • Accessible route: a firm, stable, slip-resistant path at least 36 inches wide from accessible parking or the main gathering area to the ramp, with running slope no steeper than 1:20 and cross slope no steeper than 1:48. Loose gravel, sand and bark are not compliant surfaces, and a compliant trailer at the end of a bark path is a compliance failure.
  • Power: three 20-amp, 120-volt circuits within 100 feet on separate breakers, or the generator placed at least 25 feet from the trailer and guest areas on the stall side, away from the ramp.
  • Water and waste: none required for a weekend; hose and sewer cleanout or holding tanks for monthly use.
  • Lighting: the ramp and the accessible route must be lit for evening events; the trailer's exterior lighting covers the ramp, and we recommend path lighting from the venue.
  • Public right-of-way: a 20-foot trailer in a street or on a plaza needs the city's permit. San Francisco's Public Works Street Space permit requires 6 feet of clear sidewalk on commercial streets and 4 feet minimum elsewhere; Oakland's Obstruction Permit keeps 5'6" clear and needs No Parking signs 72 hours ahead.

Service and cleaning standard

  1. Before delivery: tanks pumped and sanitized, fresh water filled, all three suites cleaned, grab bars and roll-under sink inspected, stock loaded for 200 guests, climate control and pumps tested.
  2. At delivery: trailer leveled, ramp deployed and checked for slope and handrail security, power or generator connected, every toilet flushed and every sink run, accessible route walked with your contact.
  3. During the event (optional attendant): restock every 30–45 minutes, wipe down, keep the ramp and floors dry, monitor the waste level.
  4. Weekly (monthly rentals): pump the tanks, refill fresh water, clean and disinfect all three suites, restock, check HVAC, pumps, ramp and handrails, photograph, GPS-stamp and text the receipt.
  5. At pickup: ramp stowed, tanks pumped on site, trailer cleaned and inspected; waste disposed only at permitted facilities such as EBMUD Resource Recovery in Oakland.

Compliance notes

  • 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 Exception 3 — where single-user portable toilets are clustered, at least 5% (minimum 1) must be accessible; the accessible suite covers a cluster of up to 20 units. Standards at ada.gov.
  • California Building Code Chapter 11B (Title 24) — California's accessibility code applies the 5% minimum and is stricter than federal on several dimensions; the accessible route rules above come from it.
  • 2010 ADA Standards §203.2 — worker-only construction restrooms are exempt; the exemption ends when the public or non-worker staff share the facilities.
  • County environmental health — events with food service file a sanitation plan listing restrooms, accessible restrooms and handwashing.
  • Film — Caltrans allows portable restrooms as essential vehicles on closed state highways used for filming; see film.ca.gov, Caltrans highways and freeways permits.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an ADA restroom trailer cost to rent?

$3,495 for a Friday delivery to Monday pickup, including delivery, ramp setup, stock, pickup and tax within 25 miles of Hayward, or $6,800 per 28 days with weekly service. May through October adds a 15% peak surcharge, making a summer weekend $4,019. A generator, if the site has no power, adds $750.

Does the ADA + 2 trailer satisfy the 5% accessible rule?

Yes. The accessible suite counts as the accessible restroom for a cluster of up to 20 units under the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2 Exception 3 and CBC 11B-213. Its ramp, 60-inch turning space, grab bars and roll-under sink meet the accessible-fixture requirements. Larger clusters add 1 ADA unit per additional 20.

How many guests does the ADA + 2 trailer serve?

Up to 200 guests for a 5-hour event at the 1-per-75 rule of thumb across its three stalls. For a 4-hour event with alcohol, sized at 1 per 50 plus 20%, plan on about 125 guests. Above 200 guests we pair it with a 4-stall trailer or add standard units to the public cluster.

What is the ramp like?

A fixed-slope ramp with handrails on both sides leading to a wide door and a level threshold into the accessible suite, deployed by our driver at delivery. The ramp needs about 15 to 20 feet of firm, level ground on the entry side of the trailer, which is the main difference from our other trailers at setup.

What power does the trailer need?

Three dedicated 20-amp, 120-volt circuits within 100 feet of the trailer, for climate control, the water pump, lighting and fans. If the venue cannot provide three separate circuits, our 7 kW generator at $750 per weekend powers the trailer for 12 hours per tank and our driver connects it at delivery.

Can the two standard stalls be signed women's and men's?

Yes. The two private stalls have their own exterior doors and can be signed women's and men's, or all-gender, and the accessible suite is always all-gender. For a wedding we usually sign one stall per side and keep the accessible suite open to any guest who needs the space, including parents with strollers.
