Porta potty questions, answered

Quick answer

How many porta potties do you need for 500 people?

Quick answer

500 people need 10 porta potties for a 4-hour event and 12 when alcohol is served, including at least 1 ADA unit and 3 to 5 handwash stations. Pottyline sizes at 1 unit per 50 guests per 4 hours, adds 20% for alcohol and 5% ADA for public events. Ten standard units cost $1,950 per event.

The short answer

Ten portable toilets for 500 people at a 4-hour event, twelve with alcohol, with at least one of them ADA-accessible and three to five handwash stations beside them. The rule we use at Pottyline is 1 unit per 50 guests per 4 hours, plus 20% for alcohol, plus 5% accessible (minimum 1) under California's accessibility standards when the public is invited.

The details

The rule. 500 ÷ 50 = 10 units for up to 4 hours. With a bar, 10 × 1.2 = 12. Handwash at 1 per 2–4 units gives 3 to 5 stations. Public events need 5% accessible units: 5% of 10 is 0.5, which rounds up to 1, and we recommend 2 at this size so a wheelchair user never waits behind a line.

The exception. Longer events do not need proportionally more units if you service them. Six units pumped at hour 4 serve as many people as twelve units pumped never, so for an 8-hour festival day the better order is 10 units plus a mid-event pump-out at $125, not 20 units. Multi-day events get a service visit each morning.

Worked example: 500 people, 6 hours, beer garden, public park.

ADA, 5% minimum 12 of the 122 ADA + 10 standard
Handwash, 1 per 2–4 units12 ÷ 34 stations

Split the 12 units into two clusters of 6 so no one walks more than about 200 feet, and put the handwash stations at the exits of each cluster. Keep 10 feet between the restrooms and any food service, the spacing county environmental health inspectors look for on a sanitation plan.

What it costs. Ten standard units at $195 are $1,950 for up to 3 days, all-in within 25 miles of Hayward. Two ADA units add $650, four handwash stations add $396, and the pump-out is $125: $3,121 for the full example above.

What we do at Pottyline

The instant price calculator takes the headcount, hours and alcohol answer and returns the unit count with ADA and handwash included, priced by ZIP. For a 500-person event we deliver the day before, walk the layout with your site contact, and photograph every unit in place. The pump-out crew arrives at the hour you set and sends a GPS-stamped photo of each unit after service.

A 12-unit order needs a straight truck path and about 4 feet by 4 feet of level ground per unit; the festival page covers layout, county sanitation plans and the 10-pack logic. If part of the crowd is VIP or a wedding party, pair the cluster with a 2-stall luxury trailer. Public events in Oakland or San Francisco parks need a park-use or street permit on top of the units; the permit guide names the offices.

Frequently asked questions

How many porta potties for 500 people with alcohol?

Twelve. The base is 500 divided by 50, which is 10 units for up to 4 hours. Alcohol adds about 20% to usage, so 10 becomes 12. Make at least 1 of the 12 an ADA unit if the public is invited, and add 3 to 5 handwash stations. Pottyline rents 12 standard units for $2,340 per event, with ADA units at $325 each.

How many handwash stations for 500 people?

Three to five. The guideline is 1 handwash station per 2 to 4 portable toilets, so a 10-unit cluster needs 3 at the lean end and 5 where food is served. Each Pottyline station has two sides, a foot pump, 22 gallons of fresh water, soap and paper towels, and rents for $99 per event. County environmental health expects handwashing near food vendors at temporary events.

Do porta potties need to be serviced during a 500-person event?

Yes if the event runs past 4 hours or spans more than one day. A standard 70-gallon tank handles roughly 200 uses, and 500 people over 6 to 8 hours will exceed that on the busiest units. Pottyline schedules a mid-event pump-out for $125 per visit, which empties, rinses, recharges and restocks every unit and sends a timestamped photo of each one.

Can a restroom trailer replace porta potties for 500 people?

Partly. The 8-stall luxury trailer serves up to 600 guests at $4,695 per weekend and suits a wedding or a VIP area, but it needs a level 28-by-8.5-foot pad and dedicated power. For a festival crowd of 500, the usual layout is 8 to 10 standard units at the main cluster plus a 2-stall trailer at $2,495 for VIP or staff, which keeps lines short at both ends.
