Quick answer
How many porta potties do you need for 100 guests?
Quick answer
100 guests need 2 porta potties for a 4-hour event with no alcohol, and 3 when there is a bar or the event runs 5 hours or longer. Pottyline sizes at 1 unit per 50 guests per 4 hours, adds 20% for alcohol and rounds up. Three standard units cost $585 all-in in the Bay Area.
The short answer
Two units for 100 guests at a 4-hour event, three if you serve alcohol or the party runs past 4 hours. That follows the industry guideline we publish at Pottyline: 1 portable toilet per 50 guests for up to 4 hours, plus 20% with alcohol, rounded up. The Portable Sanitation Association International publishes looser ratios of about 1 per 100; we size conservatively because a line at the restroom is the one thing guests remember.
The details
The rule. Divide the guest count by 50 to get the base count for a 4-hour event. Add 20% if there is a bar, because people drink more and visit more often. Add one unit for every extra 4 hours, or book a mid-event pump-out at $125 instead. Round every fraction up.
The exception. A seated 5-hour wedding runs lighter than a standing party, so our wedding rule is 1 unit per 75 guests before the alcohol adjustment. For 100 guests that is 1.33, rounded up to 2, then 2.4 with a bar, rounded up to 3. The number lands in the same place, so plan on 3 for a wedding of 100 and read the wedding sizing guide for the trailer math.
Worked example: 100 guests, 5 hours, open bar.
| Step | Math | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Base (1 per 50, 4 h) | 100 ÷ 50 | 2 |
| Alcohol +20% | 2 × 1.2 = 2.4 | 3 after rounding |
| 5th hour | covered by the rounding margin | 3 |
| ADA (public event only) | 5% of 3, minimum 1 | 1 of the 3 is ADA |
| Handwash | 1 per 2–4 units | 1 station |
Three units plus one handwash station is the order. Put the handwash station between the units, not at the food tent, and place the cluster 50 to 100 feet from the bar so the walk is short but the view from the dance floor is not the restroom doors.
What it costs. Three standard units run $195 each, or $585 for up to 3 days, all-in within 25 miles of Hayward. Upgrading to luxury flushing units at $295 each brings a flush toilet, an interior sink and a mirror for $885. A handwash station adds $99. Over the 25-mile line, delivery is $3.50 per mile each way on the extra miles, so Napa adds about $88.
| Option for 100 guests | Event price (≤3 days) | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| 3 standard units | $585 | Delivery, pickup, full stock, tax |
| 2 standard + 1 ADA | $715 | Same, plus a wheelchair-accessible unit |
| 3 luxury flushing units | $885 | Flush toilet, interior sink, mirror, solar light |
| 2-stall luxury trailer | $2,495 weekend | Porcelain toilets, running water, A/C and heat; up to 150 guests |

Frequently asked questions
How many porta potties for 100 guests with alcohol?
Three. The base is 100 divided by 50, which is 2 units for up to 4 hours. Alcohol raises usage by about 20%, so 2 becomes 2.4, and we round up to 3. Pottyline rents 3 standard units for $585 per event of up to 3 days, or 2 standard plus 1 luxury flushing unit for $685, delivered and picked up within 25 miles of Hayward.
Is one porta potty enough for 100 guests?
No. One standard unit serves about 50 guests for 4 hours before lines form and the 70-gallon tank fills faster than guests expect. For 100 guests the minimum is 2 units, and we recommend placing them side by side so the line moves twice as fast. A single unit is fine for a backyard party of 50 or fewer that ends inside 4 hours.
Do I need an ADA porta potty for 100 guests?
Only if the public is invited. California's accessibility code requires 5% accessible units, minimum 1, when portable toilets are clustered at a public event, so one of your 2 or 3 units should be an ADA unit at $325. A private wedding or family party is exempt, but one ADA unit at $325 is still the right call if any guest uses a wheelchair or walker.
Should I rent a restroom trailer instead for 100 guests?
For a wedding, often yes. The 2-stall luxury trailer serves up to 150 guests with porcelain flush toilets, running water and climate control for $2,495 per Friday-to-Monday weekend, plus 15% from May to October. Three luxury flushing porta potties cost $885 for the same event. Below 100 guests on a tight budget, the single units are the honest answer.
